Concert Review: The Dirty Filthy Mugs
at the Blind Pig- Ann Arbor, MI

There has been much disappointment with punk bands today. Through all the disappointment comes the Dirty Filthy Mugs. The Dirty Filthy Mugs are from Los Angeles, California and, as they state it on their website, “play aggressive fun, honest punk rock.” Fronted by Matt Wedge, the Mugs are made up of: Timbecile (Guitar/Squeezebox), Joey T (Bass), Conk (Drums), and Ace Facial (Lead guitar). With a similar Celtic/Folk punk infusion as the Dropkick Murphy’s/the Swinging Utters, the band shows their originality with an energetic live performance.
The Dirty Filthy Mugs performed at the Blind Pig, in Ann Arbor Michigan as support for the Meat Puppets. As you might think, this was an unusual paring. There really is no real association of punk sound to the Meat Puppets. As the venue opened doors and people started entering, unfortunately it was apparent most people had not shown up for the Mugs. As the band began to play they had to do some serious pleading for people to approach the stage. However, this did not last as their fun street punk sound with e Celtic feel easily won the crowd over. The Mugs had just released their first full length album All Yobs In. Much of their set consisted of songs from this album. Songs performed and off the album to mention include: “Dirty Filthy Mugs are we”, “You and your Twat Friends”, “All Yobs in”, “Another round”, and “Frontline Hooligans.” The live performance of The Dirty Filthy Mugs is filled with energy and it is apparent that crowd interaction is a major part of their live performance. Unfortunately being paired with the wrong band and the wrong fan base was evident. As a fan of the street punk sound, I was really impressed with the honest feel of the lyrics and the catchy melody. For anyone out there that is looking for that street punk sound needs to check out the Dirty Filthy Mugs, you will easily be won over.
